Whether you are interested in reducing energy costs, improving efficiency or complying with regulations – it all means you need reliable data to provide you with the information needed to make smart decisions. Rene Ratering, CEO of RRISSIS Intelligence Ship Information System, predicts that big data will bring about a true revolution within the shipping industry and believes that companies are only just beginning to discover its full potential.
From an office in Groningen, Ratering and his team developed a fleet performance indicator system that displays real-time cloud data to provide an overview of vessels’ fuel use, performance and emissions. “Big data helps you to gain insight into your ships’ performance. You can monitor the position of your ships and how they perform, 24/7, all around the globe. This information helps you to increase efficiency, reduce the fuel bill and emissions. When a vessel does not maintain its optimum voyage speed, for example, the system sends you a signal. Too fast and the vessel awaits an expensive early arrival at the port, whilst too slow means the ship has to speed up to arrive on time, incurring extra fuel costs.”
Ratering believes cutting fuel costs is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of how big data will affect the shipping industry. “Big data in the shipping industry is still in its infancy. Over time, I think it will play a very large part in minimizing overall operational expenses, reducing the carbon footprint and staying ahead of competition.”
